With the help of his amazing cinematographer, Michael Fimognari, they are able to generate incredible levels of tension, characteristic of the original film. As long as it makes sense, be always open to new ideas.Īs the director, Flanagan proves once again he's a pretty talented guy by seamlessly recreating some of The Shining's most iconic scenes, but also by delivering some tricks of his own. It's a sequel, so expect things to be added to the story (nothing is removed or retconned, so relax). Just don't go with a "purist" mentality, thinking that Flanagan doesn't have the right to explore and expand "the shining". Flanagan is able to do the impossible: he perfectly continues the story left by Kubrick while respecting King's "demands". In Kubrick's movie, Jack freezes to death in the maze outside the hotel while chasing his son, while the hotel stands tall. In the book, Jack Torrance forgets to relieve the hotel boiler's pressure, and it explodes, destroying the hotel and killing Jack in the process. In case you don't know, the major difference between King's book and Kubrick's cinematic adaptation is the ending. Still, SPOILER-FREE for Doctor Sleep, don't worry. I'm going to leave a SPOILER WARNING for The Shining since the film came out 40 years ago, and I already wrote a review about it. Not only did he need to deliver a sequel worthy of being associated with a beloved classic, but he had to deal with all the differences between the source material and Kubrick's changes. With that said, Mike Flanagan had one of the toughest jobs of 2019. It's a cult classic horror movie, one that influenced generations to come, especially regarding filmmaking techniques and equipment. Moving on…Īs you probably know by now (if you don't, check out my The Shining's review), I'm a huge fan of Stanley Kubrick 's adaptation of Stephen King's novel of the same name. I’m just writing this “prologue” to say that you shouldn’t go in expecting a “scary” film. Movies with a horrific story, based on relatable themes, those are the ones that leave us uncomfortable and disturbed. If we watch a film with cyclical jump scares, we’re going to forget about it as soon as we leave the theater. These movies are the ones that truly get to us and stay with us for a while. However, one common complaint about this type of horror films is that they aren’t “scary enough”. Granted, we’re scared of what we’re scared of. Well, American Beauty is available online on Netflix, Max, Prime, and Hulu. There’s this misconceived idea that “scary movies” are the ones with demons, monsters, or ghosts literally showing up in jump scare sequences, one after another, accompanied by an extremely loud sound. Lester, in his death, was able to escape it. The film, taking place in suburbia, another 90s motif of imprisonment, is a jaded exploration of the failed American dream as well. ![]() Lester’s lust for Angela, Angela’s provocative nature, Carolyn’s affair with Buddy Kane, Ricky’s false admission of homosexuality, and Frank’s trying to kiss Lester, are all examples of it.Īll of them are trying to escape their societal confines. It explores non-conformity in more than one way. Overall, American Beauty deals with a lot of complicated themes. qom8FzS38c- Hidden Movie Details March 19, 2020 In American Beauty (1999), Lester (Kevin Spacey) is constantly framed behind objects which appear to resemble jail cells, representing his own feelings of "imprisonment" within his bougie middle-class bubble. What Happens in the End of American Beauty? But since he is terrified of society’s judgment, he can’t let someone who knows that secret live. Frank shoots him because Lester is the only one who knows that he is a homosexual. ![]() In the end, Frank shoots Lester in the back of his head, and the film ends with the dead man recounting the world’s beauty and how grateful he is to have seen it. But before that, a lot happens, which gives the film its famous still-debated ending. In fact, it can be interpreted in different ways, especially the ending of the movie and how Kevin Spacey’s protagonist Lester is made to bite the bullet in the end by an unnamed killer. Instead, the film was a commentary on multiple things. When the film was released in 1999, some viewers were upset that it didn’t entirely sell what it had promised through its posters. It raised eyebrows due to how erotic and titillating it was while doing nothing much. The official poster of American Beauty shows only a woman’s navel with a rose beside it.
